2010 Super Bowl Saints Win: Greatest Gamble in Super Bowl HistoryPAYTON'S PLACE It was the greatest gamble in Super Bowl history. Credit New Orleans head coach Sean Payton with a gutsy call to open the second half of Super Bowl XLIV. A recovery of an onside kick propelled the underdog Saints to a 31-17 victory over Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. After New Orleans successfully executed the high-risk, high-reward strategy, the Saints outscored the Colts, 25-7.
New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees outplayed the much-publicized Manning by completing 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. Brees was named MVP of Super Bowl XLIV. Cornerback Tracy Porter clinched the Saints' victory with a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:12 remaining in the game.
PEYTON'S PLACE. The 33-year-old Peyton Manning let me down. He also disappointed a legion of fans and gamblers across the country when failing to lead his favored Colts to victory in yesterday's Super Bowl. Manning is beginning to look more like Dan Marino or Dan Fouts than Joe Montana or Johnny Unitas. Montana and Unitas sit atop the list of NFL's greatest quarterbacks, while Manning still has plenty of work to do.
Manning's main rival, Tom Brady, retains his position as the best quarterback in the game today, barely edging out Manning and his gaudy regular-season statistics.
How can an objective football observer consider Manning to be the greatest quarterback of all-time, if he's not even the best quarterback of his generation? Here's the clincher: Tom Brady's career postseason record is 14-4 compared to Manning's mediocre mark of 9-9.
BEST SUPER BOWL PREDICTION. EOG poster "Railbird" deserves special recognition for his bold prediction that the Saints would not only beat the Colts, but win by seven points or more. "Railbird," with career post #3,991, recommended a pointspread proposition of New Orleans -6.5 at odds of 9-2, or +450.
The controversial poster, who sometimes upsets members of the EOG community with his politically incorrect views, never believed the Peyton Manning hype. In fact, "Railbird" is one of Manning's biggest detractors. EOG regulars Buskie, Iona, Raycabino and Trytrytry also backed the Saints. Trytrytry receives honorable mention for predicting a final score of 33-17, two points off the actual final of 31-17.
EOG founder Ken Weitzner was not pleased with the result of Suepr Bowl XLIV. Weitzner ignored his gambling instincts and followed the so-called smart money by placing a five-figure wager on Indianapolis.
In a thread titled, "I have a serious betting issue involving the Super Bowl," Weitzner cited his reservations about backing the "popular" side, yet still bet the Colts. Weitzner's tale illustrates professional gamblers make mistakes, too.
SAINTS IN A BREES. The game was closer than the final margin would indicate. New Orleans won by 14 points, but the outcome was in the balance late in the fourth quarter.
Let the record show, the Saints won fair and square. This was not a fluke result. There were no controversial plays, no questionable calls and no lucky bounces.
The Saints outcoached and outplayed the Colts. New Orleans was the better team, rallying from an early 10-0 deficit to outscore Indy, 31-7, over the game's final three quarters.
Super Bowl statistics do not tell the story of the game. Instead, take a look at the drive charts and you'll see why the Saints were able to defeat the Colts.
Here's the key stat for Super Bowl XLIV: Indy had a grand total of eight possessions, two in each quarter. Half of the Colts' eight possessions started inside their own 14-yard line. New Orleans won the hidden game of field position, an angle overlooked by most media outlets.
C'MON MAN.....If Las Vegas is truly a 24-hour town, then why were the sports books at Terrible's, Tuscany and Ellis Island closed on the eve of Super Bowl XLIV?
A midnight run 15 hours prior to kickoff resulted in total frustration as the sports books operated by Lucky's, Cal-Neva and Leroy's were closed for business.
If I owned a sports book operation in Nevada, I would operate 24 hours a day, with a special emphasis on weekends and around-the-clock parties surrounding big events like the Super Bowl and March Madness. Gamblers make poor decisions in the wee hours of the morning when tired or drunk or drugged.
MURDER AT THE STARDUST. Today marks the 10-year anniversary of a murder that took place at the Stardust Race and Sports Book.
I'll never forget the morning of February 8, 2000. I was checking the oddsboard at the Stardust when suddenly three gunshots rang out. It sounded like loud firecrackers exploding.
A crowd of about 30 sports bettors and horseplayers watched in horror as a wounded man raced outside the property before collapsing just beyond the glass doors near the sports book entrance.
In a surreal moment, the gunman calmly placed his weapon on the betting counter and declared to a sports book clerk, "I'm done. I'm not going to hurt anyone else."
Hotel security responded quickly. Soon, the police and the paramedics were on the scene. The gunman sat quietly on a chair in the sports book, while his victim laid on the sidewalk outside, desperately fighting for his life.
Shortly after the shooting, management at the Stardust Race and Sports Book closed its operation, while detectives began an investigation. An hour later, I remember seeing yellow tape that cordoned off the crime scene and white chalk marks on the sidewalk outlining where the victim had collapsed.
Word on the street indicated the motive for the shooting was a $100 debt. Other reports claimed the gunman was suffering from dementia.
Ten years ago today, the lives of two men ended horribly. The victim, 56-year-old Philip Greenspan, was pronounced dead approximately three hours after the shooting. Anthony Cuccia, the 59-year-old gunman, was handcuffed and later charged with first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon. Cuccia is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
I've always heard about desperate people doing desperate things, especially here in Las Vegas. But hearing about desperate acts and witnessing them first-hand are two totally different things.
MONDAY'S BEST BET Play GOLDEN STATE +4.5 over Dallas. This is not a bet supporting Golden State, but rather a bet against Dallas, a team that has lost four of its last five games, prompting Mavs' owner Mark Cuban to say, "My team stinks right now."
Dallas has surrendered at least 100 points in each of its past five games. I prefer Golden State point guard Monta Ellis over his aging counterpart Jason Kidd. Don't be surprised if the Warriors snap their eight-game losing streak tonight in Oakland.
